Have You Ever Seen The Rain | TAB

Using TAB, let’s look at how we can incorporate all the important bits of this seemingly simple tune into one acoustic guitar part.

Here’s the intro.

Have You Ever Seen The Rain TAB, Intro.

The first G chord is a nice touch as it takes us to Am, a chord we never play again!

I’ve then written F/C, although on the recording the bass plays F so F/C is just for the guitar. You could argue it should be one or the other when presented with lyrics, I reckon it should be an F when written using chords and lyrics.

For the C/G, we mute the 5th string, and the G gets a bass line incorporated, although it’s so high it doesn’t sound much like a bass.

The last two bars are just a C chord (chord I) with that characteristic bass line at the end.

This brings us to the verse which looks like this if you ask me!

Have You Ever Seen The Rain TAB, verse.

I like how the guitar drives here, using an almost endless stream of 8th notes. The hammer-on for the G bass is an attempt to include what the bass plays. Should you play with a bass player, don’t put this in!

Here’s the chorus, now we play a 1/4 note on beat 1.

That F/C is back, the descending bass line in bars 3 and 4 creates the chords CCsus2 because it’s easier to play this on string 4, we could have called the C/G an Am7/G.

One of the best ways to create contrast in songs is to use opposite messages in the music and lyrics.

John Fogerty, the lead singer, and songwriter of Creedence Clearwater Revival is a master of this technique, perhaps the perfect example is Bad Moon Rising.
