Self-Eliminating Practise Routine

This is an overview of all topics practised in the SEPR. Arpeggios, Chords, Progressions, Chromatic Exercises, Minor and Major Modes all have 8 lessons each!

You can Master the Guitar in 8 months!

When I started Spytunes, I had a scale theory that you could take the 10 open position chords, turn them into barre chord shapes – minor and major pentatonic shapes and build the modes on this platform.

The goal is not to learn a bunch of patterns, but to see all the intervals around each CAGED shape.

This all came from a time when I was practising for hours every day, learning this concept myself.

In the end, it became a practise routine that once you can play a series of exercises, you can move on to the next step and effectively eliminate the previous step.

Having taught this concept in a music college, I wrote a book about it (Guitar Conspiracy) and designed Chordacus, a software that clearly displays all patterns.

Calculating that you practise this every day for an hour, I expect it to take you 8 months to complete, effectively mastering the guitar fretboard in much less than a year!

There are six mini courses below to study with 8 steps in each, see them through to the end and you will never have to practise this kind of theory stuff again, just play tunes instead!

Practise Routines

Arpeggios

Arpeggios Course

There are four essential arpeggios to learn on the guitar: min7, maj7, dom7, and the notoriously awkward min7b5.

In the arpeggios course, we master all of these across every CAGED shape using highly efficient exercises.

Chord Progression

Chord Progression Course

These lessons don’t involve any exercises. Instead, we explore how to describe chords when they appear in sequence and form progressions.

The chord progression course uses a combination of the major scale (with Roman numerals) and blues language to analyse harmony in popular music.

Chords

Chords Course

The powerful CAGED system is the most effective way to organise the guitar fretboard. It explains all chords and expands seamlessly into arpeggios and modes.

Simply follow the eight steps in the chords course — it might just be the best thing you ever do for your understanding of the guitar.

Chromatic + Sweeping

Chromatic and Sweeping Course

The chromatic and sweeping exercises will address any issues you have with synchronising your left and right hands while picking.

Take the chromatic + sweeping course to improve your accuracy, build speed, and develop your rhythmic reading skills.

Major Scales

Major Scales Course

Using the CAGED system as our foundation, we start with five major pentatonic shapes and develop them into the major modes.

This self-eliminating practice routine is structured as an eight-step major scales course — all you need to do is put in the time.

Minor Scales

Minor Scales Course

As with the major course, we begin with the CAGED system to build five minor pentatonic shapes and expand these into the minor modes.

In this eight-step minor scales course, you’ll master all the minor scales and their modes. TAB is provided throughout — although once you grasp the concept, you won’t need it!
