All Of Me (Real Book) Guitar Lesson with TAB

All Of Me Guitar Lesson + TAB
In this guitar lesson, we look at how to comp All Of Me using the concept of closest shape possible. Using TAB, this will get you going on the road to playing jazz standards!

All Of Me | TAB

The worst thing you can do when learning how to play with the help of jazz standards is to take a Real Book tune, ignore the comping and melody and instead write down what modes to use, before you start playing them badly up and down, pretending this is how to improvise.

Instead, you should take each step extremely seriously and aim to keep it musical. These are the steps to successful Jazz standard practice:

  1. Comping using the closest position possible
  2. Walking bass
  3. Melody
  4. Develop melody
  5. Improvise
  6. Start in a new key
  7. Play through all remaining keys
  8. Play with other people

If you stick with this formula, you will learn how to play Jazz. The key is to not rush, instead, spend plenty of time on each step, and use a loop pedal for best results!

Let me help you with step 1.

Here’s TAB for how you could comp both the A and B sections (verses 1, 3, and 2, 4). The starting point is an A shape for the Cmaj7 chord.

Notice how I’ve left room for the bass by not playing on strings 5 and 6!

Here’s more TAB, now we start in an E shape.

Next, you could start playing walking bass to this comping which you’ve recorded using a loop pedal. Alternatively, transpose it to a different key if you want to stick with working on the chords.

If you can get great at comping, you could team up with a bass player, singer, drummer, and saxophonist and learn on the job!

To get into a jazz band follows the same simple principle as joining any other band; all you need is a repertoire!

Frank Sinatra recorded All Of Me.

Frank Sinatra‘s legacy might best be summed up by Stephen Holden who wrote for the 1983 Rolling Stone Record Guide:

“Frank Sinatra’s voice is pop music history. Like Presley and Dylan – Sinatra will last indefinitely. He virtually invented modern pop song phrasing.”
