I’m Yours (Jason Mraz) Guitar Lesson with Backing Tracks and TAB

I'm Yours, TAB lesson.
In this guitar lesson, we'll use the CAGED system to explore the fretboard and develop a suitable part for I'm Yours. Stick with it, and you'll gradually build the skills needed to improvise naturally over the progression. Practise along with the backing tracks to develop your timing, confidence, and creativity!

I’m Yours | TAB

The chords in I’m Yours seem deceptively easy, especially if you place a capo on fret 2 and think in the key of A. I’ve created an 8-step lesson series on the song in the Intermediate Course. You can find it here: I’m Yours lesson series.

However, I recorded that series before the release of Jason Mraz’s official recording, so the feel is quite different. My version has more of a swung groove.

In this Backing Track + TAB lesson, you get to play with Jason’s band instead of me. Adjusting to the original feel is the biggest challenge, particularly as the guitar starts the song!

From Steps 6 and 7 of the lesson series, I’ve taken the second guitar ideas, as they provide a great starting point for improvising an electric guitar part.

Let’s begin with the main progression.

Verse/Chorus

Here, we move through all the CAGED shapes while maintaining the rhythm. Once you can do this comfortably, experiment with different rhythm patterns—but whatever rhythm you choose, commit to it and keep it consistent.

Using the backing tracks, spend plenty of time working through different rhythm ideas while exploring the fretboard. The more you do this, the more natural your playing will become.

Eventually, you’ll be able to let go and find a part that feels completely natural and suits the song.

You should also transpose the guitar lick/comping figure we work on in the course so you can play it without a capo.

Put those two concepts together and you’ll have plenty of fun playing this tune.

M8

Here’s a part I came up with for the middle 8. Try it out, then develop it further to make it your own.

Once you can play all the TAB and have adapted it to your own style, aim to perform the complete tune along with the backing tracks at the top of this lesson page.
