Marry You | TAB
To play Marry You on your own in the original key without a capo is extremely difficult. There are only three chords but if you play it with that energetic feel of the original, it will hurt.
Here’s TAB, try it along with the original recording if you’re feeling brave!
I feel this is like drum rudiments, a series of L or R hand hits that once put on different sound sources get a groove. In the case of Marry You, that would be R R, L, R R, L, R, L. Try it by tapping the table.
Let’s look at how you can find a way around this madness using a capo.
- Fret 1: E – F#m – A – E, the F#m chord is barre
- Fret 3: D – Em – G – D, no barre chords!
- Fret 5: C – Dm – F – C, the F chord is barre
- Fret 8: A – Bm – D – A, the Bm chord is barre.
Starting with capo on fret 1, I would suggest you play like this, thinking in the key of E.
This is easier than F, but still hard, that F#m chord is annoying. Let’s try it on fret 3 instead, thinking in the key of D.
That’s the best way I think, try it along with the original recording, it’s fast but possible.
Let’s keep going up the neck, next we are on fret 5 and think in the key of C.
That still works but I felt that a capo on fret 3 was better, let’s keep going!
Here it is on fret 8, thinking in the key of A.
You probably agree with me that this last example didn’t work, I wrote the 2nd bar as well since you need an open string to get to the next chord but still, it’s just too high.
Perhaps if you have a loop pedal or 1st guitar player this could be a 2nd, mandolin-like guitar part.
I strongly feel that you should always try all songs with a capo on different frets to see what happens, or using the CAGED system. Either way, to find different chord shapes for every song you play is a great idea, nothing will help you improve more.
