I’m So Excited | TAB
To write a guitar part for a tune like I’m So Excited, you need to understand the full chords. This allows you to pick out rhythmic parts and licks that complement what the keyboards are doing.
Let’s begin by playing along with the original recording using this TAB, which adapts the intro keyboard part for the guitar:

This might look more complicated than it really is. If you ignore the bass note, it’s essentially Bb (G shape) – Eb (C shape). Even the Gm7 could be interpreted as a Bb. The final bar flips it to Eb – Bb.
A small variation occurs at the end, moving Eb6 – Bb, which also comes back during the solo where it repeats every time.
Here’s the verse, again using the “keyboard chords”:

As before, it’s two chords pivoting, with a changing bass line.
Now let’s look at the intro/verse as a guitar part (same thing):

If you listen to the original recording, you’ll hear how the guitar rhythmically answers the keyboard. Play along until you’ve nailed it—the two notes F – G represent the pivoting chords.
Next is the bridge. Here are the “keyboard chords” in TAB:

We’re now in the key of F (the verse was in Bb)—very clever use of neighbouring keys.
As for the guitar, it’s hard to tell what’s happening since it’s buried in the mix. When this happens, I invent my own part. Here’s what I came up with:

Notice how I keep the rhythm consistent. This helps it feel natural—a great trick. If you say the same thing rhythmically, people will believe you (also true in sales and marriage!).
Here’s the “keyboard chorus”:

And here’s the guitar part, designed to add bounce to the arrangement with short stabs on every beat:

Once you can play all these examples, jam along with the original—and don’t be afraid to vary it!
