I’m So Excited | TAB

In order to write a guitar part for a tune like I’m So Excited, you need to understand what the full chords are so you can pick out little rhythm parts and licks that suit what the keyboards are doing.

Therefore, let’s look at this first, play along with the original recording using this TAB which is the intro keyboard part adapted to the guitar.

I'm So Excited TAB, keyboard chords for intro.

This looks a lot more complicated than it actually is. If you ignore the bass note, all that is happening here is Bb (G shape) – Eb (C shape). Even the Gm7 could be seen as a Bb. The last bar flips it to EbBb.

There is a small variation at the end going Eb6Bb. This does later come back for the solo where this happens every time.

Here’s the verse, with “keyboard chords”.

Again, it’s two chords pivoting with a changing bass line.

Let’s now look at the Intro/Verse on guitar (same thing).

Listen to the original recording and you’ll notice how the guitar is answering the keyboards rhythmically. Play along until you get it nailed. the two notes F – G represent the pivoting chords.

Next up, is the bridge, here are the “keyboard chords” in TAB.

I'm So Excited TAB, keyboard chords bridge.

This is now in the key of F (the verse was in the key of Bb) very clever stuff to use two neighbouring keys like this.

For the guitar, it’s difficult to tell what’s happening as it’s been buried in the mix. Whenever this happens, I invent my own part. Here’s what I came up with:

I'm So Excited TAB, guitar part bridge.

Notice how I maintain the same rhythm as much as possible. Whenever you do this, it feels natural, this is a great tip. The listener will believe you if you keep saying the same thing repeatedly (also true in sales and marriage!).

Here’s the “keyboard chorus“.

And the guitar which is aiming to give the arrangement a bouncy feel by hitting every beat using short stabs.

When you can play all examples, jam along with the original, and don’t be afraid to vary it!
