Got To Be Real | TAB

This is not easy – there’s going to be a lot of TAB! Let’s start with the intro and outro.

Got To Be Real TAB, intro and outro.

What we have here is rhythmic displacement: four 16th notes followed by one 8th note rest. The notes are not minor pentatonic, but it’s close – the last note is a b6, not a 5th.

For the outro, we have transposed up a 5th, which is strange as the song has only been transposed up a tone before this. I guess this is what happens when you put a band together of the finest session players in existence.

Here are the chorus chords if we just try to play the keyboard chords on the guitar. It’s almost impossible – play very slowly!

Here’s a modified part you can try along with the recording. I’ve mainly taken out the lowest note to turn that keyboard part into a guitar-friendly version.

Here’s the original guitar part – aim to see how the intervals work with those keyboard chords.

As you can see, some new notes are played, changing the chord names! You’ll need to study this closely to really understand it.

I’ve modified it a bit – I think this is a good idea: to dive deeper into the song and learn even more from it. You could learn both parts, blend them, and then go even further!

Let’s now move on to the verse chords, starting with the keyboard chords.

I love how it moves from min7 to min7b5 – it sounds fantastic! The chords are so complex it’s almost impossible to put Roman numerals on them. Ebmaj7 feels like a IV chord. Eb/F is F11, so chord V.

Here’s the original guitar part for the verse.

This is a great example of why just working out what the original part is isn’t enough. As the guitar drops out for two bars, what happens if you get asked to play here too?

You simply must know all the chords for a song, even if you don’t play in some sections.

Here’s a developed guitar part that plays all the way through:

If you take every song you play this seriously, you’ll find writing parts for original songs much easier.
