On the Road Again | TAB
On The Road Again is an excellent opportunity to improve playing fast country guitar using a pick.
Start slowly and practice each example for as long as you can bear.
When you feel ready, play each idea along with the entire song (for example, verse idea 1 + bridge idea 1). Methodically work your way through all ideas like this for several days before you let go and start to blend it all.
Doing this with a song is much, much better than a silly exercise – make the tune the exercise, that’s my philosophy!
Here’s verse idea 1 using TAB.
Here’s verse idea 2.
And here’s the TAB for verse idea 3, it is much more difficult, I’ve used the intro lick and incorporated it into the picking, then adjusted this to all chords, remember to start slowly!
Let’s do all this to the bridge as well, here’s bridge idea 1.
In this first example, because of the way the pattern is laid out, we get an A5, not a full A. That’s fine if other instruments are playing the full triad. If you’re on your own that’s OK as well since you’ll be blending ideas once you’re good at this.
Here’s bridge idea 2 in TAB.
And finally, bridge idea 3, remember to take it easy, slowly, and come back again tomorrow.
The step from playing this well to improvising and adding country licks isn’t that big, getting the foundation right, as in, being able to play all these patterns along to an actual song is the biggest step, take your time!
